Twenty-Seven

I wish I could say things continued to get better. But my first month back at school was worse than it ever had been. Each day was a rinse and repeat of the same ole shit from the day before. I tried not to let it bother me. I stuffed it all down deep where hopefully it couldn’t hurt me. I got harassed a lot more than my guys knew about. Because I knew how ferocious they could be, I kept a lot of it to myself and shouldered the soft laughs and whispers, trying to keep my head held high. Water off a duck’s back and all that shit my therapist liked to spout off about.

What really hurt was when I overheard people whispering about how I’d faked my pregnancy to trick the guys into coming back to me. Whenever Juliet caught my eye, she sneered at me and rubbed her stomach. Then she’d roll her eyes and whisper to whoever was nearby. I knew she was behind the fake pregnancy rumors.

Even now, weeks after losing Blossom, I found my hand rubbing my phantom baby. Knowing Juliet had reduced something precious and heartbreaking to a mere rumor made my blood boil. But there wasn’t anything I could do about it. Not without wrecking my future.

The only bright spot aside from my guys was the musical. Fox showed up every afternoon and swept me into his arms before kissing me. We’d rock our lines and songs together before he’d take me home to the rest of my guys. Minus Ethan. We still hadn’t heard from him a month in. My heart ached, and I had to admit I had doubts about whether he’d decided he was better off without us. Enzo had managed to speak to Ethan’s parents a few days ago who said he’d called them once and promised things were going well.

Either way, whether he opted to be with us or not, as long as he was happy and healthy, I’d accept his choice.

So the morning marking my one month return to teenage hell, otherwise known as high school, I steeled myself for whatever shit would get tossed my way. I kissed Enzo bye outside the door to my first class and watched him amble down the hallway to his.

When the bell rang signaling the end of first hour, I trudged back to my locker. Spencer stood across the hall, watching me as I passed by. He still managed to piss me off more than make me smile. He was sarcastic and blunt. It drove me nuts. The guy was strange, at least that was my opinion of him. The girls loved him though, so at least it did keep some heat off my guys.

Jamie was coming from the opposite direction. When she got near, she grabbed my arm and stopped me before I got to my locker, spinning me around, pulling me from my thoughts.

“What?” I asked, wincing as her nails dug into my arm.
